Being the new kid on the block, I am in awe of the many “tea celebrities” in this industry. Since starting Loose Leaf Club this year, I have been developing my own online tea community and have decided to reach out to interview legends in the industry to curate their knowledge for my audience. Today’s interview is with Andy Hayes from Plum Deluxe. Known internationally for his expertise in living the good life and making moments matter, Andy Hayes is the founder and creator of Plum Deluxe. A consultant and speaker to brands large and small, his work has been featured in publications like CNN, Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal, and National Geographic Traveler.

The spotlight is on Andy:

Why do you think people drink loose leaf tea?

Well, let’s start with why people drink tea in general. Tea, to me, has such gravitas to it. It asks you to slow down and be present with it. I also feel like tea connects us to many things – the earth, to those who came before us – it’s very grounding. As for loose leaf, I think most of us that drink loose leaf prefer to see what we are drinking – how many things in the grocery store do you buy and consume but don’t actually see the product? Tea bags are weird.

What is your daily tea brewing routine?

Most of my tea rituals are centered around evening activities – I always like to have a seasonal herbal tea (I change it up – spicy, comforting in the fall/winter, something fruity or floral in the spring/summer). With that tea I spend some time writing in my journal as well as reading, with no electronics after the last 60-90 minutes of my day.

What is your favorite tea?

If I had to pick just one, I’d say fruity white teas. I first started drinking a lot of tea when I lived in the Netherlands, and the Dutch have some phenomenal fruit teas, often white. I like the smoothness (both flavor and caffeine levels) of white teas and the fruit is refreshingly perfect without sweetener.

If you could sit anywhere in the world and sip tea, where would you choose and why?

At a scenic outlook of one of the famed hiking trails in New Zealand.  I spent several weeks there exploring and hiking and it’s some of the most incredible scenery in the world – from waterfalls to incredibly blue lakes to graceful hilltop mountain. It’s one of my favorite travel destinations by far.

With Gratitude,
